Our Partners
Why are you doing this?
At Niantic we believe in taking care of the planet and we invite everyone to help us make the world a cleaner place on Earth Day through our collaboration with Mission Blue and multiple NGO partners. Together we can make a real and tangible impact on our world and support the important work of others to protect our oceans for future generations.
What and when is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, since 1970 various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. With over 1 billion people taking part it is the largest civic observance in the world.
Who are Mission Blue?
Led by legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, Mission Blue is uniting a global coalition to inspire an upwelling of public awareness, access and support for a worldwide network of marine protected areas known as Hope Spots. For more information about Mission Blue and their work in protecting our oceans please visit their official site.
What is a Hope Spot?
Hope Spots are special places that are critical to the health of the ocean. Hope Spots are about recognizing, empowering and supporting individuals and communities around the world in their efforts to protect the ocean.
Who are Playmob?
Playmob are a gaming for good organization, playing to solve the world's greatest problems.
I can't attend any cleanup events on 22 April but I'd like to support the cause. How can I do this?
Yes you can still get involved and support the initiative by showing your support on social media, or by going even further and making a donation to Mission Blue.
What will happen to all the trash being collected at the events?
Each NGO partner will deal with the trash collected in its own way, some more creative than others and we look forward to sharing further details with you after the event. Trash will be processed in a manner that is responsible and considerate, so you can rest assured that whatever the Pokémon GO community remove from the event locations it will be helping to ultimately clean our oceans.
Where can I find statistics on what has been collected by the community during Earth Day 2018?
We will be working with all of the NGO partners to collate details on the amount of trash collected as well as the number of attendees and will be reporting on this and publishing details as soon as we have the information
Registering for a cleanup event
Do I need to register to attend a cleanup event?
Yes you will need to register to take part. Please search for an event near you on this site and follow the simple registration process. All successful registrations will be notified that they have been successful.
Is there a limit to the number of people who can take part in a cleanup event?
Most of the cleanup events do have a capacity and these differ for each event. When an event is at capacity and no more places are available it will be marked as FULL.
There are no cleanup events listed near where I live, or the events near me are fully booked. Will you be adding more cleanup events?
Yes, we will be working hard to add more events where there is demand from the community to support this initiative. We will be continuing to add events up until a few days before Earth Day so its worth checking back to see if any have been added that you could attend. If you want to help to get an event near you set up, please provide a few details here and where possible we'll try to work with a local NGO partner that can coordinate a local cleanup. All events that will partake in the cleanup will be listed and finalized by April 18th.
I know of an area that could really benefit from a coordinated cleanup, how can I go about having this location added to your list of events?
We aim to add more events in the run up to Earth Day so if you provide us with some additional details here we will where possible work with a local NGO partner that can coordinate a cleanup event.
Is there any age restriction to attend an event?
Yes, these cleanup events are restricted to players 13+
Can I organise my own cleanup event?
We would never discourage anyone from organising a cleanup event that helps to make our world a cleaner, healthier place, however due to the complexities around health and safety considerations and permit requirements which differ from country to country, we have made the decision for this initiative to organise these cleanup events through existing NGO partners who are well versed in running these events in their local areas and have necessary permits and health and safety guidelines in place. If you can't find an event near you or the events near you are fully booked you can always let us know about other NGO's who aren't currently supporting that could help by submitting a few details here
The cleanup events
What are the specific address of the cleanup events, how do I find the meeting point on the day?
Ahead of Earth Day, we will email everyone who has registered with specific event details, including meeting point and any specific instructions on how to get to the location.
Can I bring a friend to a cleanup event?
Yes you can bring a friend to a cleanup event but they must also go through the registration process.
I have successfuly registered for an event, what happens next?
You will recieve an email informing you that you have been accepted to attend a cleanup event about a week before the event, along with details of what will happen next and what you will need to bring on the day.
What should I bring to a cleanup?
Each cleanup event is unique as we are working with many different partners all over the world to bring this initiative to life. You will receive an email with full details of what to expect and what to bring on the day that are specific to the event you are attending. What you will need to bring is some form of ID (so we can validate your successful registration) and a willingness to help make the world a better place. If you have your own suitable gloves and a bucket then that would be helpful. You should bring water too to keep hydrated. We'd suggest bringing water in a sustainable vessle and not in a plastic bottle as plastic bottles are a terrible source of plastic pollution.
What should I wear to the cleanup event?
You'll be walking around outside for a couple of hours so whatever you feel comfortable in. We would recommned that you wear closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops please), layered clothing, weather-appropriate jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. The shoes you bring should be ones that you don't mind getting dirty, and if you have a good pair of gloves then bring those too.
Do I need to print my ticket or email and bring it to the cleanup event?
Yes, please bring a copy of your email confirmation to the event to mark your attendance.
What is happening at the cleanup events?
Each event is unique however the collective theme is that the Pokémon GO community come together to help clean an area and help reduce the damage being done to our oceans. There are no in-game events taking place, however if enough people attend overall on Earth Day then we will be unlocking in-game rewards to the entire Pokémon GO community as a thank you.
What time do these cleanup events take place?
Most events will take place over 2 hours between 10 A.M. - Midday local time on Earth Day however each event is unique so please check the specific times for the event you are interesting in registering for. Confirmation of the start and end times for each event will be confirmed with all registered players for that event via email in advance.
How long will these cleanup events last?
Cleanup events will run for approimately 2 hours. You should aim to arrive at the event location approximately 15 minutes before the start time so all attendees can be processed accordingly. Volunteers will be on hand to help attendees and to sort the trash that is collected during and after the event.
In-game rewards
What are the in-game rewards associated to this initiative?
The in game rewards are tiered so that the more players who take part in the cleanup events, the better the rewards for the entire Pokémon GO community.

If 1,500 people attend, we unlock 2x catch Stardust for Ground-, Water-, and Grass-type Pokémon. This will increase to 3x should over 3,000 people attend cleanup events!

When will the in-game rewards be available/released?
The in-game rewards will be released within a 48 hour window from the start of Earth Day.
